Do Forestry Services handle residential tree disposal in Toronto?
Homeowners are responsible for tree disposal in Toronto. Urban Forestry Services do not provide a tree disposal service in Toronto. The City does provide facilities to dispose of some yard waste. You can take yard waste to one of the City’s Drop-off Depots all year round. And from mid-March to mid-December they will pick up some types of yard waste curbside. The diameter of branches and trunks for curbside collections cannot be greater than 3 inches. They also provide Christmas Tree disposal for a limited post-Christmas period.
Any bigger than that or outside of those times, you will need to dispose of your trees and large yard waste yourself. Sarginson’s Tree Services has commercial-grade wood chipping equipment that will dispose of your trees, stumps and yard waste safely and efficiently. You can then use the wood chips as path material or mulch for your plants and trees – so it is economical and great for the environment too.
How do I dispose of yard waste & fallen trees in Durham Region, Kawartha Lakes, Peterborough, York Region or Northumberland County?
Yard waste curbside collection, Christmas tree disposal and yard waste recycling schemes operate in Durham Region, Kawartha Lakes, Peterborough, York Region, or Northumberland County. In each area there is a limit to the size of yard waste that is collected curbside, with the exception of Christmas trees, so it’s best to check the specific rules that apply in your area. In most cases, the length of bundles must be under a certain size (typically around 3ft). Similarly, there are limits to the overall weight of the bundle and the diameter of the branches within it (anywhere between 2 and 4 inches). In some areas you can also drop off larger branches or tree stumps at waste depots. These will then be chipped and the woodchips offered back to the community. Here are some useful links:
If you have a large amount of yard waste or large items – such as tree stumps, branches or even a fallen tree – Sarginson’s offer a woodchipping service. Our commercial woodchipping equipment will make short work of your yard waste and leave you with a pile of woodchips to use in your yard. For your own safety, do not attempt to use woodchippers unless you are experienced with this type of equipment and fully aware of the safety measures that you need to take.
What are the benefits of wood chipping?
Wood chipping is a very efficient means of tree disposal and dealing with large, bulky yard waste. It’s a great alternative to burning your waste. A commercial wood chipper will quickly reduce the waste wood from a fallen tree that has been filling your yard into a manageable pile of wood chips that you can use in the garden. Wood chips are great for the environment. Burning yard waste releases carbon into the environment, but using wood chips as mulch puts it back into the soil. Using wood chips in your yard is great for your trees and plants. The wood chips break down over time so slowly release nutrients for your plants. As the wood chips decompose they increase the organic matter present in the soil which improves the structure and health of the soil. Using wood chips as a mulch also prevents moisture loss, so you conserve water too.
What are the downsides to wood chipping?
Don’t mulch trees with wood chips too close to the trunk of the tree. The woodchips can retain too much moisture close to the trunk which can lead to problems with fungus or insects. Not all types of trees are suitable for use in your garden as mulch. Some species of trees can be very acidic and will inhibit plant growth rather than promote it.

How do I dispose of large yard waste?
Larger or heavy yard waste generally won’t be accepted for curbside collection. Some waste depots will accept larger yard waste but you will need to make your own arrangements and may be charged a fee. For large amounts of yard waste you may find chipping it and reusing the woodchips in your own yard is a better option.
How do I dispose of my Christmas tree?
Most areas operate a curbside collection or drop off points for disposal of Christmas trees.
What can I use wood chips for in my yard?
Wood chips can be used for a variety of purposes – mulches, weed suppression or making paths. If you are using wood chips around trees make sure that you do not mulch right up to the trunk as this can damage the tree.

Highly recommend Chris and his team from Sarginson’s Tree Removal Services from Courtice. Chris removed a large sugar maple tree from backyard in Oshawa that was very close to house and garage and extending over to neighbours. It took 8 hrs to remove the tree and cleanup. Chris is very skilled and knowledgeable. His quotes and options provided were very reasonable and all communication was excellent. He and team worked diligently, safely and were professional and polite. A bucket truck was used to reach part of tree but for most part Chris had to climb the tree to cut down each limb carefully and they used ropes to guide. They cut up wood (as requested) and even stacked for me. (I saved some $ by not having logs removed)They removed all smaller branches and debris and used a chipper. They swept and blew away shavings as part of cleanup.I was very satisfied with the job and Chris. Would recommend for tree removal. We hired Chris and his team to take down our massive 55 year old willow tree and 2 other trees. They also pruned two others. They were here early and stayed late until everything was finished. They cleaned up the yard after and took all the wood with them! Very hard workers. They offered to leave some of the wood that is good for burning, which we weren't aware of. Recently Chris and his team remove a huge maple from our front yard (needed to go). It was about 80 feet tall and was within 8 feet of our house. I watched in amazement as they took the tree down and was totally impressed with both their bravery and professionalism. A big thank you to Sarginson's Tree Services for doing a fantastic job heavily pruning our 50 year old sunburst locust tree. They had the equipment and manpower to handle the task and did a very thorough cleanup once the pruning was finished. As an added bonus they blew the leaves out of the gutters while up there in their bucket truck!

Chris and his team did a fantastic job on our two giant honey locusts that really needed some major trimming of dead branches and taking down a cedar pushing against a neighbours garage. We had booked through another company and the original subcontractor had been a no show. Sarginson’s came out with just two days noticed. They were told it would be a half days work but quickly realized it would be a full day job. Regardless, they finished the whole job and even took the time to give us advice on other trees in the yard as this is our first summer in our house. They team was super efficient and friendly and did a great job with clean up. We will be contacting them directly for our future needs!

My wife and I watched Chris dance around 5 large poplars that survived the windstorm last week but were threatening our garage. An absolute wizard with a chainsaw. His approach was a pleasure to watch. His equipment was top of the line and total safety was the priority. Two of the trees were fairly precarious in proximity to the garage but he definitely has vast experience in limbing and rigging so no damage was incurred.
