Springtime Pruning in Port Hope

Caring for Butternut Trees in Ontario

This week, our crew was called to a property in Port Hope to inspect and prune a mature Butternut tree—a native species in Ontario that’s sadly becoming less common due to disease. The job also included trimming and shaping a large yew hedge, but the Butternut took centre stage. With the homeowner concerned about its health, we partnered with a certified Butternut Health Expert to assess the tree. We completed the pruning work a month after the inspection in line with Ontario’s Endangered Species Act.

Why Butternut Trees Matter

Butternut Tree Ontario Juglans Cinerea

The Butternut tree (Juglans cinerea) is native to Ontario and is valued for its beautiful shape and ecological importance. Unfortunately, it’s under threat from Butternut Canker, a fatal fungal disease that has wiped out much of the population across the province. As a result, Butternut trees are listed as endangered in Ontario. Anyone planning to work on or near one must follow strict regulations and may require an official butternut health assessment.

Why Spring Is the Right Time

Early spring is a good time to prune Butternut trees. With the branches still bare, it’s easier to see the overall structure and identify any dead or weakened limbs that need to come out. Pruning before leaf-out also helps reduce stress on the tree as it heads into the growing season.
In this case, the homeowner had already arranged for a certified Butternut Health Expert to inspect a month earlier. The tree was assessed and found to be in fair health, with enough vigour to justify preservation. Our team was then brought in to carry out the recommended pruning, removing deadwood and reducing risk to nearby structures while supporting the tree’s long-term stability.

Professional Work, Done Safely

Using a bucket truck, we accessed the upper limbs and completed careful pruning to reduce strain on compromised branches. Our team worked methodically, ensuring proper cuts that support the tree’s long-term health while protecting the home and nearby structures. We also removed debris and processed branches on site using a chipper, leaving the property tidy.

While there, we also gave the homeowner’s yew hedge a proper trim. Yews benefit from shaping in early spring before new growth flushes out, helping maintain a neat appearance throughout the season.
