They can also provide a home to fungi, pests and diseases that can damage your healthy trees.
People often call us a year or two after they have had trees removed to deal with the unwanted stump that was left behind. Removing a tree can be costly. We understand it’s tempting to save a bit of money by leaving the stumps in place. However, as well as being unsightly or a potential trip hazard, stumps can become a breeding site for unwelcome insects such as termites or carpenter ants. They also provide a home for pests and diseases. Even though you have removed a tree, the roots can keep growing. This can cause damage to property or surrounding plants and trees. Finally, with some species of tree, the stump will start putting out shoots again.
But which is the best approach, stump removal or stump grinding?
There are two options to deal with a stump after you have removed a tree – stump grinding or stump removal. There is not a hard and fast rule as to whether it’s better to grind a stump out or to remove the stump and the surrounding root system. Whilst it is less costly and disruptive to grind a stump out, there may be good reasons to remove the stump and the roots instead. We explain the pros and cons of the different approaches so you can make an informed choice about what is best for you.
Stump grinding uses a specialist piece of equipment to grind the stump into small pieces. It is reasonably fast and doesn’t cause too much disruption, although as you imagine it can get pretty noisy. It also has the benefit of producing wood chips that you can use as mulch in other parts of the garden (as long as the tree that was removed wasn’t diseased, or the stump has become so. The disadvantage to stump grinding is that the root system of the old tree is not touched at all. This can be a problem when it comes to planting new trees or landscaping your yard. You may find that the land you had plans for is already occupied by the old root system of your tree. Roots will eventually die and rot down, but it can take many years for them to do so.
Stump removal involves the removal of the stump and the surrounding root system. This involves a lot of machinery and hard work and quite a bit of disruption to the surrounding land. A mature tree can have a root system that extends many meters beyond the canopy of the tree. It’s not possible to be precise about the reach of a root system by looking at the tree or the surrounding area. There are some rules of thumb such as multiples of the height, canopy or drip line, but a lot depends on the particular species, the surrounding treescape and ground conditions. Moreover, root systems don’t grow symmetrically. So it can be hard to predict exactly how much, or where, you are going to need to dig up to remove a stump completely. It’s safe to say that you will be digging out a good way further than the tree stump and it’s going to cause disruption to your yard – and leave you with a big hole. However, if you removed the tree in the first place because the roots were causing damage to property, paths or even the sidewalk it may be necessary to opt for stump removal vs stump grinding. Another reason you might opt for stump removal is that you have landscaping plans where you need more of a ‘clean slate’. If this applies to you, it may be worth going through the initial pain of stump removal rather than stump grinding.
